Korean Food Guide: What to Order and Where
約7分
Eating is half the reason to visit Korea, and you do not need to speak the language or spend a lot to eat brilliantly. Here is a friendly starting menu, where to find it, and how to handle dietary needs.
Street food to start with
Markets and busy streets are the easiest, cheapest introduction. Point-and-eat is completely normal, and most stalls take a card or T-money.
- Tteokbokki — chewy rice cakes in a sweet-spicy sauce, the national snack.
- Hotteok — a warm griddled pancake with a molten brown-sugar center (great in winter).
- Gimbap — seaweed rice rolls, cheap and portable.
- Bindaetteok — crispy mung-bean pancakes, a Gwangjang Market classic.
- Odeng/eomuk — fish-cake skewers in warm broth, perfect on a cold day.
Sit-down meals worth planning around
- Korean BBQ — grill pork belly (samgyeopsal) or beef at your table; wrap it in lettuce with garlic and ssamjang.
- Bibimbap — rice with vegetables, egg and gochujang, mixed together; easy to make vegetarian.
- Kimchi jjigae / sundubu — comforting stews that come bubbling hot with rice and side dishes.
- Korean fried chicken — double-fried and crispy, the classic late-night order with a cold drink.
💡 The free side dishes (banchan) are usually refillable — just ask, politely, and they will top you up.
How ordering works
Many restaurants have picture menus or English menus, and pointing works fine. Some places use a table buzzer or a tablet to order. Tipping is not expected anywhere. Convenience stores are a genuinely good, cheap meal option too — heated banmeal boxes, ramyeon stations with hot water, and endless snacks.
Halal, vegan and allergies
It is more doable than many expect. Itaewon has a cluster of certified halal restaurants near the mosque. Buddhist temple cuisine is naturally vegan and increasingly available, and vegetarian bibimbap or kimbap (ask without ham/egg) is widely found. For allergies, packaged foods label common allergens, and it helps to carry a translation of your specific allergy to show staff.
💡 Filter your restaurant picks by dietary need before you go rather than improvising when you are already hungry.
