Seoul by Neighborhood: Where to Base Yourself
7分钟阅读
Seoul is a city of distinct neighborhoods, and where you stay shapes your whole trip. Here is a quick personality guide to the areas most visitors consider, so your base matches the trip you want.
Hongdae — young, lively, late
The university district around Hongik is Seoul’s youth-culture engine: busking, indie shops, cheap eats, clubs and album stores. It is energetic well past midnight and central enough (Line 2 and the airport line) to reach most places easily. Great for first-timers, solo travelers and anyone who wants the city buzzing outside their door.
💡 Light sleepers should book a room a street or two off the main drag — the core stays loud late.
Myeongdong — shopping and convenience
Myeongdong is compact, central and packed with cosmetics shops, street food and mid-range hotels. It is touristy but genuinely convenient, with easy subway access and a quick hop to palaces and Namdaemun market. A safe, practical base if shopping and location matter more than local character.
Insadong & Bukchon — traditional and calm
For a quieter, more traditional feel, the Insadong–Bukchon area sits among palaces, hanok alleys, tea houses and galleries. It is walkable and photogenic, ideal for travelers who prioritize history and atmosphere over nightlife.
Gangnam — modern, polished, pricier
South of the river, Gangnam is sleek and business-like, with upscale shopping, big hotels and the K-Star Road walk in Apgujeong nearby. It is well-connected but more spread out and generally pricier; a good fit if you want a modern, quieter-at-night base or are here partly for K-pop agency areas.
Seongsu & Itaewon — trend and diversity
Seongsu is the café-and-pop-up neighborhood of the moment — creative, calmer, and a favorite for idol sightings. Itaewon is Seoul’s most international area, with diverse food (including a cluster of halal restaurants near the mosque) and nightlife. Both suit repeat visitors or travelers who want something less touristy.
💡 Whichever you choose, prioritize being within a few minutes of a subway station over being dead-centre — Seoul’s subway makes almost everywhere reachable.
